Spinal Stenosis Causes
Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spine, can have many causes. However, all of them have the capacity to cause significant and debilitating symptoms to the sufferer. These symptoms can include pain, tingling, numbness, burning, and much more in various parts of the body depending on where the stenosis occurs in the spine.
Causes of spinal stenosis include:
- Ruptured or herniated disc
- Bulging disc
- Degenerative disc
- Swollen ligaments
- Bone spur
- More
Treating Spinal Stenosis Causes
Treatments for spinal stenosis focus on addressing the underlying condition causing narrowing of the spine. For example, if the spinal stenosis is caused by a bulging disc, treatments would be specific to that issue. While each person and condition requires unique treatment, many regimens include some combination of the following:
- Rest
- Stretching
- Spinal decompression
- Epidural steroid injections
- Pain medications, either over the counter or prescription
- Anti-inflammatory medications
In addition to these treatments, surgery can be used to address many of the conditions that cause spinal stenosis. The two types available are open back/neck surgery and endoscopic spine treatment. Of the two, the latter provides fewer risks, a faster recovery time, and a higher success rate.
