Spinal Stenosis Causes and How They Can be Remedied at Laser Spine Institute

Spinal stenosis causes serious pain for some sufferers by compressing spinal nerve tissue. This compression results in irritation, swelling, and numbness and tingling at the stenosis site, as well as in other parts of the body on some occasions. That’s because if the compression is severe enough, the nerve will send pain signals to wherever it travels in the body including the limbs or extremities. Fortunately, there are a number of treatments to reduce this pain, but to understand how they work, it helps to understand the condition first.

There are a wide variety of causes for spinal stenosis. Scar tissue, bulging discs, excess bone, and other tissues can crowd the spinal canal and press on nerves. In minor cases, treatments like rest, avoiding certain activities, and building up muscle in the back can help reduce the pain by limiting the amount of pressure that occurs at the stenosis site. In conjunction with these methods, hot and cold compresses, pain medications or a spinal steroid injection may be used to reduce pain as well. But when none of these treatments work, surgery may be recommended. Physically removing the invasive tissue is the only true way to eliminate spinal stenosis, but it’s used as a last resort due to its invasive nature.

At Laser Spine Institute (LSI), we use a variety of treatments to eliminate spinal stenosis causes. Each is performed using endoscopy, which limits trauma to the body. Endoscopic procedures require only one small incision—they use a narrow tube to gently push muscle aside and reach the stenosis site rather than making a large cut in the back and pulling muscle away to reveal the spine, which is the case with traditional open back surgery. This gentler approach leads to a quicker recovery than that which follows traditional surgery, and it also results in less pain during and after the procedure.
